Comparison: AI vs. Human Translation

AI translation has improved dramatically in the last decade, but it still has several key weaknesses that human translators can spot right away.

Context and nuance

  • AI often struggles to interpret tone, intent, and implied meaning—especially in ambiguous sentences.
  • For example, “bank” could mean a financial institution or a riverbank; AI may choose the wrong sense without sufficient surrounding context.
  • In many languages, “you” can be formal or informal, masculine or feminine, singular or plural or triple plural (as in Arabic), or a combination. The AI default (usually masculine formal) may be incorrect and offensive to the audience (such as a group of professional businesswomen).
  • Humor, sarcasm, and idioms are particularly tricky (“kick the bucket” might be translated literally).

Cultural adaptation (“transcreation”)

  • AI usually translates word-for-word or phrase-for-phrase, but doesn’t fully adapt for cultural norms, local idioms, or audience expectations.
  • A marketing slogan might sound natural in one culture but awkward or even offensive in another.

Register and formality

  • In many languages (e.g., Spanish, French, Japanese), the choice between formal and informal address is crucial.
  • AI sometimes mixes them within a document or chooses the wrong level for the situation (e.g., using the informal “tu” instead of the formal “vous” in a professional French email).

Domain-specific accuracy

  • Technical, legal, or medical texts require precise terminology that AI might mistranslate without a specialized glossary.
  • AI may also “hallucinate” plausible-sounding but incorrect terms when faced with rare or industry-specific vocabulary.

Formatting and consistency

  • Long documents can show inconsistent terminology across sections.
  • AI might also drop formatting, reorder bullet points, or misalign tables and captions.

Ethical and privacy concerns

  • Online AI translation tools often process and store text on external servers, creating confidentiality risks.
  • In regulated industries, this can breach laws like HIPAA, GDPR, or attorney–client privilege.
